Broke the driver's side mirror glass on my '96 before--it ran me ~$35-40 at the dealer's parts dept. I get a GM employee discount, but not enough that the original price would have been $56! Maybe you have a heated, electrochromic mirror in yours..mine was just a plain mirror. If unsure what type of mirror backing you have, take in your V.I.N.--they can look up what type you have installed. Installation on mine involved threaded jackscrews which snapped into the mirror backing, then were fed into the Az and El actuators--hard for me to describe, fairly easy to figure out, when looked at.

I've also replaced the driver's side mirror on my '01, which IS a heated, electrochromic mirror. It was leaking fluid from the frame's edge. I was unable to remove it, without breaking the glass, as I pulled it off. Don't know what the price was, as I got it under warranty, and did it myself in service drive, rather than wait 2 hours for a tech to get to it...
