: I switched my '96 C2500 Subs rear diff. to synthetic. Now I have a slight leak. Not major but enough to coat the floor pan (new rustproofing!). Is there a crush sleeve that needs replaced and what is the required torque on the yoke nut.
I have never experienced any problems with ring and pinion relationship when replaceing the pinion seal. The crush sleeve is there to limit loosening torque on the pinion nut should bearing wear come into play. Unless you have considerable bearing wear (which is not common) the pinion to ring relationship should not be appreciably compromised. Using the proper torque on the pinion nut should compensate for whatever minute bearing wear there is (compressing the sleeve a wee bit more) and leaving you once again with a good set up. Inspect the yolk for unusual wear at the seal seat before you reinstall. If there was too much bearing wear and too much clearance results between the gears the rear end will warn you of the fact before damage can occur with noise that you should easily detect especially under deceleration. Maybe someone else can offer the proper pinion nut torque but if not your dealer should oblidge.
