Pinion preload should be at or below 25 - 35 in-lbs for new bearings, and 5 - 15 in-lbs for used bearings, as measured by an inch pount torque wrench turning the pinion nut.
I would try reusing the "collapsible spacer". Mark the pinion nut wrt the end of the pinion for reference.
I shadetree terms, it's tight enough to hold a 1/2" breaker bar out at 90 degrees without turning.
