Andy, Felix is right in making very sure it's the switch as opposed to the servo or speed sensor or a vacuum leak in the tank or one of the hoses. Switch replacement is simple, it's getting there that takes a long time.
You'll need a steering wheel puller and a compressor for the lock ring that holds the steering wheel lock plate near the top of the steering shaft.
If I were going to the work of replacing the stalk switch & planned on keeping the truck, I'd also do the ts/hazard mechanism (~$40) and the ts cancelling cam (~$5) while I was in there. Both are available from NAPA.
TS stalk pulls straight out of its socket, trick is rethreading the cable down through the column. I just did one in my '91 last weekend, and it's very difficult to get all the wires in a flat configuration down the column. What I did was tie some nylon cord to the ends of the stalk switch cable, the inside ts switch cable, and the dimmer switch cable. That let me pull the original harnesses up through the column, and then thread the new ones down by pulling the cord back through the column. I found I had to remove the dimmer switch wires to give me enough room for the inside ts harness to thread back down the column.
The cable for the stalk switch goes through a nylon channel...you'll see it on the side of the plastic conduit that holds the inner ts wires and dimmer switch wires flat against the inside of the column.
It's helpful to remove the sheet metal gizmo under the column that holds the dimmer switch module, as well as the column support (4 bolts into the column), and finally the two nuts that hold the column up against the instrument panel...this is necessary to reomve the plastic conduit holding the wires in place inside the column.
A shop manual would be a neat idea. As I said, only hairy part is feeding the wires back in order so that everything lays flat like it was before you took it apart. Oops...almost forgot...get rid of the aid duct directly under the steering column & replace when you're done.

: The cruise control on my 88 Suburban has almost stopped working altogether. It could be either the switch or the controls within the turn signal lever. I have a replacement lever and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions before I tackle the replacement? Thanks in advance.
