Stubborn rear axle fill plug, 1990 10 bolt rear axle

Does anybody have any tricks for removing a stubborn fill/check plug on a 1990 K1500 10 bolt rear?

First of all, I'm assuming it's a 3/8" female, where I'd use a socket extension to turn it.

For now, it's getting a soaking with Liquid Wrench a couple of times a day until Saturday, and I'll put some PB Blaster on it, too. I'll hit it with an impact wrench if I can't turn it then, and I guess I can apply some heat, but torches underneath the truck in any proximity to the fuel tank worries me a lot.

Any tricks of the trade I'm missing?

I think my gear whine is more than low fluid, but I want to check before pulling the cover to inspect. If I do pull the cover, what sealant is recommended on the re-installation?

Thanks for any input,

Foy
