Hylomar is excellent for this application, it should be applied to the cover side and wheel bearing grease on the casting side.
As for the plug Ben is on the right track with the deep tight fit for the 'short' extension (the shorter the better). I would add that before applying the impact wrench that you give the extension some pretty hefy whacks with a 2 lb. hammer. The housing is quite beefy and also malleable so it can take a good lick without fractureing. If that fails you can direct the flame from your torch thru a section of 3/8" tubing into the plug recess so as to expand the plug to break the hold, cool quickly with water.
