Transmission temperature

I've got a 2000 GMC Yukon XL K2500 6.0L with about 90,000 miles. It has the factory Transmission Temperature Gauge. Where does that gauge read the temp from? What kind of numbers should I be seeing? I've seen the Automatic Transmission Life Expectancy Chart that shows the optimum street temp at 175.

The reason I ask is that I've had some problems since I bought the truck about a month ago. Initially I had occasional hard shifts. I had the transmission serviced and it ran fine for about 1-1/2 weeks. Then the hard shifts came back and were worse than before. I took the truck back to the dealer and ended up having the transmission rebuilt.

It sure shifts smooth now. However, before the rebuild the temp was typically around 150. The highest I had seen was about 162. The temp on the trip home from the dealer after the rebuild hit 200. After a long drive today (about 150 miles) the temp gauge showed 224. The fluid level is a little high.

Thanks in advance,
Barry
