Below from my files, for reference. I'm fairly certain it's from Ben but not sure (just guessing from the writing style and content). Don't mean to take credit for it. Sorry, if from someone else.

Change the engine oil a week before. Use synthetic if he doesn't and can go back to it next change. Higher film strength will have it stick to the cylinder walls better and no blow by if the rings are worn a bit.

Double dose of carb/injector cleaner one tank ful before the test. New gas just before the test. I like Berryman's Chemtool B12 (toluene main ingredient). On that full tank for the test, put in double dose of "HEET" brand alcohol. It's sold as a drier for the gas, but does same thing as MTBE.

Make smog check appointment for early in the morning. An hour or half an hour before the test, drive the vehicle on the freeway to get it up to temp and hold it there for min ten minutes. When you get to the smog test, make sure they don't let it sit too long and cool down and get to the test while it's hot.

Of course, tune up and all new parts if it needs it. New air cleaner a must.
