The carrier is what most call the housing. The case is the center piece between the bearings.
Best bet is to swap the entire assy (carrier) so you preserve the gear setup of both units. You cannot swap the cases using the same shims. There are critical settings for the pinion and ring, plus the wear pattern of the gear teeth has already beed established. On top of that, it's simply not worth the amount of work to do the swap right. Buy a salvage yard assy if need be but use the whole thing.
