: Best to DIY by resoldering the offending joints and regrease the slip rings.

Here is the proper way to do soldering:
- Have the Pencil type Soldering iron (not gun, too HOT!) heated up and ready to solder.
- Place the heated iron onto the join being soldered and wait for the solder to melt.
- If there's globs of excess solder, use some kind of $uction Bulb (Radio Shack) to $uck the solder off and discard.
- Have the solder rope ready. Heat the cleaned join again until the solder (whatever is left of it) on the joint melts.
- Place the tip of the solder rope at the junction between the iron and the joint and touch the iron with the solder rope just long enough for some solder to melt, creating a "heat bridge".
- Once the solder on the "heat bridge" begins to flow, touch the solder rope on the join (NOT THE IRON) being soldered.
- When the solder rope begins to melt, move the solder rope around the joint, kind of "paint" the solder onto the joint. Let the solder flow evenly. This is the way to prevent a over-heated solder joint.
- When the joint is covered completely with new solder, remove the soldering iron and the solder rope simultaneously.
- The resulting joint should be shiny and no dull spots.
One more thing. If you are right handed, hold the iron with you LEFT HAND and "paint" the solder with the RIGHT HAND! If you are left handed, do it the other way. The reason is that you can control the flow of solder better with you regular hand.
