hey JMD that tip saved a buddies a$$ just before christmas, he mentioned the grinding to me and I told him what it could be and sure enough it was a $10 fix rather than a trip to the dealer and probably $1200 for a new t-case like they would do. thanks!!!


: Sounds like what I had. Turned out to be simple and cheep. There is a C clip that snaps over the spline of the drive shaft coming out of the rear of the transfercase. You have shattered this and it is in the transfercase getting ground up. Remove the driveline, remove the housing extension. Look or feel down the shaft towards the case. Likely there will be no clip, but there should be a groove for it to snap into. If its gone and or you have found parts of it simply get another ( under $10)and snap it into place. Be sure to flush the transfer case to get the chunks and shavings out. I did it again the next week to be sure.
