I'm suspicious if both the internal and driver's side outside mirrors both stop dimming (I don't believe passenger side does it). It sounds to me more like a blown fuse or short.
One thing you can do to assess the wiring configuration is to email www.painlesswiring.com for some advice. They seem to have access to a lot of wiring info, and can probably quickly reply to you whether the mirrors are connected somehow. I emailed them a question several months, and they were very prompt & complete with thier reply.
I don't know about the outside mirror, but the internal mirror appears to be similar to a commercially available product for around $200. Link below to one catalog source.
: I have a 1998 GMC yukon, of late I have noticed that the rear view mirror no longer changes or do the outside mirrors turn dark when headlights reflect on them.My local GMC dealer tells me the only fix is to replace the mirror unit, at a cost of $ 570.00 !!
: : My question is, can the unit be fixed at hopefully a considerable less cost, and if so who would be able to fix it for me ?
: : Thanks for your help (SHOCKED)
