Make sure you have not turned the dimming feature off accidently... Is the green LED lit? Check your owner's manual for instructions on how the dimming can be turned on and off. Sometimes a battery disconnect put them in the off mode.
The mirror headunits do go bad. If the compass and temperature feature is working, it is not the fuse. The mirror is made for the General by the Gentex Corporation, and the dealer is trying to hit you for full mark-up on it. If the mirror headunit proves bad, Gentex sells the same units to the aftermarket, and we used to buy them through their distributors for our dealer conversion packages. Be aware that you must have a Gentex unit to control the side mirror dimming.
