JB, it seems the consensus is that no sealant is needed although it is common practice to apply a thin coat of bearing grease to both surfaces of the gasket to provide for some softening and also facilitate a future removal. High temp RTV sealant when used in conjunction with a synthetic lubricant also appears to be a concentual no-no but I used the RTV on my last change which has been over a year ago and have yet to see any leakage or even any wicking. Sorry for such an in-definative answer but that is just my experience; seems that even though synthetics have been around for so long now confusion still exists as to the do'es and don'ts.
