I've never had a problem with M1 and 'any old rtv'. I did convert to ultra-black when I saw the tsb. Probably overly paranoid. My Cummins uses what definitely looks/feels like gray rtv on both front & rear axle covers, fluid used is 75W(?)-140 full syntheic. Zero leaks there too.
