If your owner's manual calls out the gm spec OR API specification GL-5, M1 meets the GL-5 requirement. You can call M1 at 1-800-662-4525 and ask. My '98 shows the gm spec or GL-5...not sure what your manual says.

: I have a 2001 suburban 3/4 ton 4WD 4:10 rear axle. I would like to change the rear differential oil myself. My question is, is synthetic Mobil 1 75w - 90w an appropriate substitue for the the OEM fluid which is $24 to $28 a bottle. Mobil 1 is less than $10 a bottle. The Mobil 1 container does not say whether it meets the GM specs requirement and since I do a lot of towing I want to make sure that any substitute gear oil will meet or exceed GM specs. Anyone know if Mobil 1, or any other brand, meets GM specs? Thanks, this is a great board and I have received a lot of valuable info here. I apologize in advance if this question has been asked. I do know that many of you do use Mobil 1 in the differential, but I do not recall reading any posts which actually state that Mobil 1 meets the GM specs
