I had similar symptoms, could it be coming from front end? Or is it definitly from engine. Mine was from front diff. They (GM) fount that their supplier of front differential cases, cast them with miss alined bearing supports. They create a harmonic at certain speeds. They replaced my front diff. housing, and growl/noise is gone. By the way, mine is a '03 tahoe with 5.3. Might be same problem though.
