Almost same here (working mother, divorced). Grandpa born 1908, died 1973. He got me started with mechanical things.
Age 10, bought riding lawnmower and hopped it up for wheelies and burnouts. Age 12 graduated to mini-bikes. Age 14, MB runs with alcohol and nitro fuel. Pant leg in jackshaft many times! Age 16, life testing transmissions and tread life. Flipped first air filter lid...
