I could not see the breaks, or cold joints, even with visual aid. But I had the symptoms (intermittent operation, stopping in the middle, changing speeds, won't shut off). Finally just went ahead and reflowed the solder at the key joints. Lo and behold, the wipers now work perfectly. Thanks guys for the nice pics and great advice.
