There should be no spark! Make sure you know if it's OBD1 vs. OBD2. A 97 I think is OBD2. The OBD2 pins are numbered, and pins 4 and 8 are used for programming the keyless entry.
If you ground the right port, the door locks should cycle 1 time. If they do, you have keyless entry.
