Trailer Wiring Size

I'm hooking up a 7-pin (Bargman-type) trailer connecter to my 94 K1500. There is no trailer towing package, so no wiring for the +12 or the brake controller. In the service manual it shows the trailer towing package as having a Red 10 gauge wire for the +12V and a Dark Blue 12 gauge wire for the brake controller. Since I need to put my own wires in for these two lines, should I use those gauges (10 and 12) or use even heavier gauge? Sometimes the manufacturer cheapens out on things and uses a part or wire that is just barely adequate. Is that the case here? I have a feeling the 10 gauge is probably OK for the +12V, but I don't know how much current a brake controller puts to the trailer brakes. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Steve G
