Scheduled Service

I have a 99 GMC 2500 with 454. I noticed that everybody is talking about changing the diff fluid at 3K and 10K. In my service manual it indicates that the fluid levels need to be checked but not replaced. Is this service necessary at 3K and 10K? This is my first suburban so any suggestions on service schedule would be helpful.
