I went from the 3:73 to a 3:42 for better gas. Although I have the turbo 400 trans (3 speed) IF your not going to tow that much, less than 5,000lbs, the 3:42 I THINK is good for highway MPG. By going with a bigger tire and going from a 3:73 to a 3:42, my RPM went down about 500, which is a lot for a 3 speed. Since your 1999 has over drive, the torque is better with the 3:73. Its up to you!

: I'm in the market for a good used 99 Sub LS and am leaning toward one with 3.73 gears and factory towing pkg to occasionally tow our 5000# travel trailer. It will be a daily driver and I'm wondering what the difference in everyday gas mileage might be between the 3.42 and the 3.73. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
