At about 73K miles, it was time to flush the hydroboost. After reading the previous posts, I decided to take it to the shop because it takes at least 2 people.
First the front wheels were raised off the floor. We hooked up the drain tube to a 5 gal pail. First time we had used the return from the hydroboost and could not get any flow. Second try we used the return from the power steering that appears to come from a cooler.
Started engine and had helper turn wheel from side to side while adding new fluid to the reservoir. I put 1 qt regular fluid through followed by 4 qts of Valvoline Synpower Synthetic PS fluid. The fluid coming out was brown and murky.
After the flush, I followed the air bleeding procedure that involves turning the steering wheel lock to lock 20 times with the engine off. We then let it sit 5 minutes so the bubbles would disappear. Finally added a small amount of UV dye in case it starts leaking, and topped it off and took test drive. All is well, no noise.
Shop fee was $ 30. for two mechanics (and me assisting).
