The whine is probably due to the pinion depth setting being off. Once the gears wear in with your current pinion depth and backlash, there is a wear pattern and correcting the depth may not fix the whine. The only sure way is to install new ring and pinion set up properly.
Have your mechanic check the pinion preload with an inch-pound torque wrench. If low, the pinion nut can be tightened up a bit. Also check the backlash. If these are within spec, leave it alone unless it gets worse.
If the axles are ever removed, look for bearing wear marks on the axles (if semi-floating).
It could well be cheaper in the long run to get the complete assy from a late model salvaged vehicle and perform a carrier swap.
