: I have an '01 K2500 with 8.1L and 4.10 gears. I only have 2000 miles on the truck, and noticed a whining or buzzing noise at hiway speeds from 60-70. If I let off the gas, the whine stops, as soon as I put my foot back in it, the whine starts. I figured it's coming from the rear end, don't know if it's characteristic or serious. Anyboidy else having same problem? Is it worth a trip to the dealer? This is my first time owning a GM, so not sure if I'm crying wolf.
My guess is that pinion is too far forward or most likely the ring is shimed too far into the pinion. In any case the rear end should not be making noise as it is a sure sign of improper set up whatever the case may be. Gear life is greatly decreased by faulty set up. Gear patterns are lapped in very quickly, so a bad set up must be addressed immediatly or gear replacement is necessary. I'm afraid that with that many miles on a gear set the damage is done and to settle for less than a new gear set would be unacceptable. I don't forsee you having any problems at all in getting your truck fixed; this is a pretty cut and dried situation and your dealership should have no problems in taking care of your truck properly.
