Question about Diesel Engines for Everyone, but Ben in Particular!

Friends,

I have been meaning to post this question long, long ago but never got around to it:

With respect to Diesel Engines, why is it generally considered more efficient than Gasoline engine?

From my knowledge base, Energy takes on three basic forms, Light, Heat, and Sound. Now, all that clattering of a diesel engine tells me that it is wasting energy by making this sound. How can it be more efficient?

As Ben had just said in his post with Subliminal with regards to Subliminal's ".. freak out about the lifter noise at start up":

"... Still believe it's not good, as it takes energy of something hiting something hard enough to make the noise...."

This kind of bolsters my question of its wasting of energy.

Can someone out there explain the whole scenario?

BTW, why can't they "engineer" the clattering sound out of a Diesel engine?
