To put it bluntly: "That ain't right".
First off, what caused the initial failure? What size is your truck; 1500, 2500? How heavy is that 24' trailer fully loaded? What failed - ring & pinion? Axle?
Second, even the dealer should have warned you about towing with a new rear setup. If you had new gears installed, they are always set up fairly tight. Towing in the first 500 miles will kill them; as you found. Proper break-in is essential to longevity.
