Differential noise. Ring and pinion setting is slightly off. Very common in GM trucks from 1/2-ton up to 1-ton. Most people do nothing about it. The sound usually only occurs during no-throttle or slight-throttle conditions. If you can control the "whine" with careful manipulation of the accelerator pedal, then the cause is ring and pinion noise.
