What do you guys want to know? I used to use ss all of the time. Most of the good stuff (unbrako (tm)) falls in at about 80 ksi tensile and 40 ksi yield. Much lower (WEAKER) than alloy steel!!! Galling is a problem and is aggrivated when used around aluminum or Ti. Most of the time they are used because of corrosion resistance. The good ones are 316ss others are 18-8 stainless or another variant of the 300 series steel. (316 is non magnetic, other 300's are slightly magnetic) read: if you drop one of these down the manifold, forget using the magnet trick. The temperature rating is to about 700 F. If you put it around plain steel or aluminum, the SS fastener will tend to make the other metal go away faster when subjected to corrosive environments (unless a sacrificial anode is around). You can also get heat treatable SS fasteners (stronger) but not common and they will almost for sure be only in fine thread. The stuff above is available in fine and coarse. Please note that SS is significantly weaker than alloy steel. Alloy steel is usually called SAE grade 5 or 8 (3 and 6 dashes on the bolt head respectively), metric is 8.8 or 10.9 (I believe). Substituting SS for one of these in a strength application would not be wise to say the least.
