I just rebuilt my '88 tailgate window last winter.
Mine quit going up smoothly and ended up going up crooked (leaning to one side). Turns out the metal track/sash assembly on the bottom of the glass was gone. Literally it was laying in the bottom of the tailgate, totally rusted. I bought a new one from GM ($40-$50 or so) and a HUGE roll of the rubbery/asphalt gasket stuff that isolates the glass from the track/sash ($40). The arms that raise the glass were actually running right on the glass. Only one of the little plastic wheels was still there. Those wear out and quit turning, which makes the motor work harder to go up and down. So, check the little wheels, they're available from GM. And clean and lube the tracks and make sure the sash is still in good shape.
BTW - If anyone needs a few feet of the glass mount gasket stuff, I'd be thrilled to sell you only what you need for a couple bucks. GM only sells the stuff in 50-100ft rolls. email me if you're interested. perakim@trusjoist.com
