Locking Diff

I'll wager you were on dry pavement at the time.
The locking differential attempts to keep both wheels turning at the same speed. When they can't something has to "slip". This could be the differential on some models, or, as in your case, the inside wheel (in the turn) was trying to spin at the same rate as the outside wheel-this caused the ride you experienced.
Some of the more fluent/knowledgable folks here on the board will probably give you a more technical (pronounced "Accurate") description.
On dry pavement leave it in 2WD.
