Instead of the minivan idea, get a '98 or newer Sub with the Auto-trac. That keeps it in two-wheel drive most of the time, but automatically engages four-wheel drive via a clutch-pack in the t-case if there's a significant difference in speed between the front and rear driveshafts. It shifts back to two wheel drive once traction is found. My in-laws have it in their '99 Silverado, and it works seamlessly, basically doing a pretty good impression of all-wheel-drive.
And best of all, it's safe at any reasonable speed, in wet or dry weather, and you still have the option of four wheel low when you need it!
