Personally would remove the cover and clean out everything at first change, as there are breaking stuff (initial high rates of wear due to break in, factory "stuff" left over from machining & assembly, etc.).
There after you should be able to just drain & refill with these exceptions/notes: if you tow or haul, if you drive "hard", if you off road and climb hills, etc. These will increase the load and increase the likelyhood needing cleaning to get the gunk out from the bottom of the pumpkin. Key is how the fluid looks coming out after that initial manual cleaning.
Finally, if you launch boats and sometimes get the diff under water, you HAVE to change and check for water intrustion.
