First, yes the new 1999+ pickups and the y2k+ Subs have changed to a synthetic rear diff fluid.
Second, $33/qt is highway robbery. On the way over, stop at an auto parts store and buy your own diff fluid. (FWIW, I just paid $6.99/qt for Mobil-1 diff fluid at Pep Boys last week.) Then ask them to use the 'customer provided' fluids. 'Tis what I do. Engine oil too.
