Rich,
After reading both of your posts, it sounds like the dealer doesn't want to service these "problems" very badly. I would get a second opinion from another dealer especially under warranty. Is this the first change for the diff and trans? If so then yes you will see some shavings on the magnet, but I'm not sure about the "excessive" play in the r/p gear. Here is a link that I have found useful when diagnosing problems with differentials. I have also called and talked to these guys on the phone and found them to be helpful in answering questions.

: I just changed the rear dif. in my 99 Suburban at 19,500 miles to synthetic oil. The Cottman man told me that there was excesisve play in the pinion pin and that this would be a warrentie issue. I have had no problems to date and when I spoke with the dealer, he said that some play in this pin is normal. Has anyone found premature failure in the rear differential in their Suburbans? This is a locking dif. Thanks, Rich
