I'm not sure what they mean by a pinion pin. That is non-standard terminology to me.
If it is the shaft thru the spider gears, they'be be crazy not to replace it right away. Depending on the cause of the problem, it could be a bad shaft, bad case, or bad spider gear. The reason I say fix it now is it it lets loose they will be looking at a huge bill compared to a minor one now.
Don't let them run you out of warranty before it gets fixed.
