Traveler, I really appreciate it. I feel lots better now. And yes, at that recent service at ~40K miles, I had the front diff (GM fluid 1052271) and the T-case done (GM blue stuff).

One thing I don't understand. If I switch to Mobil 1 or AMSOIL in the rear locker, why do they not need the friction modifier that you say is blended into GM 1052271?

And just for everyone's edification...could you please post a quick reminder on the difference between locking diffs and limited slip diffs? This has been covered before, but if you have a good understanding of this it's always a good piece of info for everyone to see.
