I installed a transmission cooler about a year ago, and just got around to installing a trans temp gauge. I took the family to the inlaws this past weekend, about 250 miles RT, air temp low 80s, no trailer. I am somewhat surprised that trans temp stayed about 125 degrees the whole trip, though it jumped to 150 grinding up a hill in slow traffic. The coolant temp held about 180-185. Is there a minimum trans temp required for long life. Some charts I have seen seem to imply this. "Optimum" temp is shown as 175 (ref http://performanceunlimited.com/documents/tempguide.html). I rebuilt this 700R4 a year ago, lots of $$, and I am very sensitive to my transmissions now. Should I worry about this running temperature? I tow very seldom - always in 3rd gear.
Thanks in advance to the wise ones in this forum.
