You didn't mention the circumstances of your differental's demise so I shall offer two possible explanations, each dependant on the two extremes of failure.
1. If you had a catastropic failure; one in which there is gear tooth breakage or total carrier failure in which lock up occurs, a direct link to transmission failure is certianly possible if not probable. I have seen cases in which so much torque was exerted on the transmission that the transmission housing was actually twisted to the extent that it had to be replaced.
2.If your differential failure was of the normal nature due to overstress, oil breakdown, defective gear set, or faulty original set up; in which replacement is warrented by excessive gear noise I would surmise that your untimely transmission demise is merely exceedingly bad luck on your part.
If #2 is the case I sincerly hope your luck will change for the better.
