Catastrophic diff failure can cause huge shock loading on the trans & drive shaft. Same thing can happen if the engine bites it, though less likely.
The engine is fairly safe from being wiped out from these kinds of things except when it's over-revved after something else lets loose.
I've only had one diff go bad but several trannys in my years of tinkering. Never blew an engine, but my old racing cohort broke a wrist pin at 9000 RPM and about all we could salvage was the intake manifold and oil pan.
