Your tires are on the "short" side, so the effective diff ratio is lower gear than 3.42's. If you are considering larger dia tires, then go to 3.73 or the 4.1's.
If you are having problems, then yes go the the lower gears.
Note that going from 3.42's to 4.1's would most likely require next thicker carrier, which translates to more money. Guess about $600-$800 more.
Kills me to hear someone talk about gas milage with towing anything over 5K lbs. Almost an oxymoron. OBTW, going to lower gear diff may just improve your gas milage, as the engine won't have to work as hard in most conditions. Nice to have both worlds if you can get it.
