About 1982, I invested in a Craftsman 4HP 20 Gallon, 240V, and it has served me very well. I'm sure it is a simple one, probably single stage, but has done the job. I noticed Sears has some nice compressors for $ 279. or so that look nicer than mine. Unless you are very serious and do a lot of work, they should be fine.
Air tools are great and cost a lot less than electric. I recently had to rip up a 3/4" plywood floor in a bathroom and my air chisel kicked its butt. It was the only tool that handled the really tough areas.
I have also gotten immense use out of a small die grinder with a scotch brite pad attachment for gasket removal and resurfacing brake rotors.
Once you have air tools, there's no going back.
