For the DIYer, I believe a 2-3hp rated, 120V, 20-30gal tank conventional(no oiless, direct drives) compressor
would serve best. Why?

-because its mobile(120V available almost everywhere, can be moved around the house, can be put in vehicle)

-handles most air chores(extended sanding, spraying will tax its capacity though)

-cost(~$300-350) for belt driven, cast iron(preferably) or alum pump

-certainly more durable and quieter than the throw-away direct drive, oiless junk.


: What air compressor would you or have you got and why? I'm looking for a general purpose one for my garage to work on Sub (rarely), vintage Mustang (a lot), and various household chores...
