Last year I picked up a Porter Cable 3HP 4gallon through Amazon.com (Tool Store). I have been very happy with it. As others have said - there are many factors involved. For me, I did not have a need for regular use of any continuous tools such as sanders.
The unit (CPF23400S) is a side stacked dual tank unit that delivers 7.7 CFM at 90 psi. Not bad for a small, portable unit.
Portability was important to me since I do love my air tools and take them with me.
My vote on tools themselves is - don't guy cheap ones for things you use regularly. For example, I have a Ingersol Rand IR2131 impact wrench. It was the only wrench that has been able to get every nut off my truck that I've ever wanted off.
